What to Bring

This section comes from a grumpy Ozzie called Euen who moaned at me good-naturedely for not included this - the only thing he looked at the damned site for.

Must Bring

Climbing Shoes. Possibly a spare pair as there is limited choice for replacement and no re-sole service of any quality. Can be hired.

Chalk. Bring as much as you can carry, It weighs nothing and the weather dictates you will need a lot. The Thai chalk is like talc (actually weight-lifters stuff).

Should bring but can hire (see below)

12 Quickdraws

2 - 4 screw gates

2 Slings

2 Prussicks

Harness

Chalk Bag (and lots of Chalk)

Better to buy in Thailand

Mozzie repellant (and coils)

Rope Mat to keep the sand off your rope and sleep on in the shade (whilst belaying?) - 100 Baht

Brush for getting the sand off - 40 Baht

Finger Tape - 30 Baht

Guide Book - cheaper 400 - 600 Baht

Sunscreen - You will need it and it is cheaper here.

Clothes

Shorts and T-shirts (or less) Most wear as little as possible. Single pitch most people don't wear shirts as it is too hot. MP routes, you may want one for the sun protection.

Waterproof Sandals Not a day goes by in Krabi without getting your feet wet in the sea. Teva like sandals are good but the velcro can get a bit worm. 40 Baht flip-flops will do. Krabi kills shoes quick. Don't bring anything you value.

Definitely not needed

rain coats

trad gear of any type - this is your holiday and it's heavy

walking boots or even trainers

warm clothes

Traveling around Asia or the World

If I was you I would bring your gear, come here first and either sell it after you have done (always a market) or carry it back to Bangkok and store it at a hotel or guesthouse. Dream Valley (or anywhere else on Ton Sai, in Krabi) will provide this service for free. Hiring is expensive and not always great quality esp. ropes.

Hiring Gear

If you need to do this don't barter too much as the first price you are offered if the final price unless you are hiring full sets or for a longer period of time when discounts can be had.

The following prices are very approximate as I don't really have a f@#$ing clue about the prices.

All per day

Full Set - 100 Baht

Rope, shoes, draws, harness - 300 Baht per item

Chalk Bag - 100 Baht

One thing I love about Thailand is that other climbers will lend you any spare gear they have. If you hang our at the Freedom Bar in the early evening or Dream Valley or Andaman at night you will probably be able to get hold of something.

Enjoy
