Near
Bangkok
About an hour
North of Bangkok near Saraburi is some bouldering. With most of
the problems created by Bangkok climbers (with some help from
Chris Sharma) it gets mixed reports.
Langsak
in Uthai Thani apparently has some bouldering also.
Krabi
Although
this area is famous for climbing there is some bouldering. This
can be found near "Defile" in the book, it simply consists
of a short wall that stays dry in the rain. You can also boulder
on Ton Sai beach but the quality of the short routes here probably
makes it worth tying in. I would say that as the dedicated boulderer
give Krabi a miss, but if you are climber who likes a bit of the
short stuff, it can be found.
The
Similan Isles
Before
I moved to Bangkok in 1997 I went out and purchased the Thailande
escalades rock climbing guide. Although hopelessly out of date
and half in French it is a well put together book and really wet
my appetite for a move away from the UK. The guide refers to good
bouldering on the eighth Island on the Similans, with the granite
boulders rising to 15m. I would love to hear from anyone who has
been there.
Elsewhere
I don't know of any other areas, but maybe you do. I would love
to hear from you. simonfoley at simonfoley.com
Koh
Tao
This
area will be done much more justice by www.zengecko.com
than I could ever do. I have been there
a couple of times, once with my boots. I did not manage to find
any of the appetising projects outlined on zengecko but like the
Similan Isles a return visit is on the cards. Some friends
of mine took a holiday here in July 2002. These photos were taken
at the time. |
